RES WELCOMES APPROVAL FOR FIRST WIND FARM IN ANGUS

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) is delighted that planning permission has finally been granted for its proposed wind farm of eight wind turbines at Ark Hill in the Sidlaws.

Consent was given at a special meeting of Angus Council s Development Control Committee in Forfar on today (June 13).

This is a landmark decision for the area - the green-light for a small but important wind farm, the first in Angus. The decision has been a long time in coming, but we commend the Council for its diligence and thoroughness in considering the application , comments RES s Scottish Development Manager, Ray Hunter.

The consent has important implications in helping Angus take responsibility for its energy demand and reduce its burden on the environment.

At present Angus imports virtually all of the energy it consumes. The Ark Hill wind farm will help redress this imbalance with a renewable energy project that the area can be proud of. Annually, the scheme will generate enough electricity to meet the domestic needs of a town roughly the size of Forfar, thus making a significant contribution to the area s efforts to reduce its impact on climate change.

By displacing fossil fuel generation, the development of the Ark Hill wind farm will avoid the emission of 23,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 270 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 80 tonnes of nitrous oxide emissions into the atmosphere each year. Carbon dioxide emissions are widely accepted as the principal cause of global climate change.

Notes to Editors
1. The Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Group is one of the world s leading wind energy companies, with offices across the UK and around the world. It has several thousand Megawatts of wind power capacity on its books at various stages of development. It is part of the UK s Sir Robert McAlpine Group of construction and engineering companies. The RES Group at the end of 2005 celebrated installation of its 1,000th MW of wind power capacity. Also in 2005 it was awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category. 2. Renewable Energy Systems UK Ltd has a strong success record in Scotland including:

The development and construction of the Dun Law wind farm south of Dalkeith (the first wind farm in Scottish Borders).
The development and construction of the Glens of Foudland wind farm east of Huntly (the first wind farm in Aberdeenshire).
The construction and ownership of the Forss wind cluster in Caithness.
The development, ongoing construction and future ownership of the Black Hill wind farm near Duns in Scottish Borders.
The development of the Drummuir wind farm near Keith in Moray (due for imminent construction).

The successful development of extensions to the above Forss and Dun Law schemes, construction of both also being imminent.

3. RES first submitted a planning application for a wind farm of 12 turbines at Ark Hill in 2000, but withdrew the application 15 months later in 2001. A reapplication for 8 turbines was submitted in 2003 and it has taken 3 years for this to come to committee.
4. The Scottish Executive intends that 6,000 MW of renewable generation should be operational in Scotland by 2020. Over 2,000 MW of wind farm capacity is now operating or has been consented across Scotland. None of these developments is in Angus.
