RES CELEBRATES SUCCESS AT OPENING OF
CALLAGHEEN WIND FARM

Commenting at today’s official opening of the Callagheen wind farm between Garrison and Belleek in County Fermanagh, Dr Ian Mays, Managing Director of the RES Group, said

“This is a proud day for Renewable Energy Systems. Callagheen wind farm has been an extremely successful project, designed to generate maximum power from a clean and sustainable fuel source with minimal impact on the local community. RES Construction has completed the project on schedule - despite the challenges of Atlantic weather fronts – whilst meeting high quality and safety standards.”

The wind farm was developed by Wind Farm Developments Ltd and was granted planning permission in 2004. Construction was undertaken by Renewable Energy Systems Construction Ltd through a turnkey contract with Scottish Power, who purchased the project in November 2005. B9 Energy O&M Ltd, is contracted by Scottish Power to provide operation and maintenance management services for the wind farm.

Callagheen wind farm comprises thirteen Siemens 1.3MW turbines and will generate electricity equivalent to at least 9,500 homes every year, displacing carbon dioxide emissions by some 38,000 tonnes per annum. It is the 7th wind farm developed in Northern Ireland by Wind Farm Developments Ltd.

Ian Mays continued;

“We could not have achieved what we have without the excellent working relationship established with the project owner, Scottish Power, and the co-operation of the landowners, the local community, Fermanagh County Council, turbine supplier Siemens Wind Power, local construction company W&H Alexander and all other companies involved in the construction and development of the project.

We are delighted to be adding another quality project to our successful track record of wind farm development and construction in Northern Ireland. The project will bring significant benefits not just to our environment, but to the local community and the County, helping Northern Ireland meet its renewable energy and climate change targets.”

Notes to Editors
1. The project was developed by Wind Farm Developments Ltd, originally set up as a joint venture between B9 Energy Services Ltd and Renewable Energy Systems Ltd and now a subsidiary of the RES Group. For more information about RES visit
2. This is based on an emissions factor of 860g C02/kWh, as electricity generated by coal fired power stations is typically displaced by wind power generating capacity. However, it should be noted that future changes in the power generating mix and fuel costs in the UK over the life of the wind farm means this figure may change over time.
